President Emeritus Dominick Barbera

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that Local 1403 announces the passing of our brother, President Emeritus Dominick F. Barbera at the age of 84 on September 28, 2018. Dominick "Dom" began his distinguished career with the Metro-Dade Fire Department in 1966 and served our community for 30 years when he retired as Lieutenant in 1996. He dedicated his life to Local 1403 and the I.A.F.F. Dominick served with honor as our Local 1403 President from 1980-1993, 2000-2003 and from 2010-2012 respectively. In addition, he served as our 12th District DVP from 1984-2006 and was voted Vice President Emeritus.

Dominick led the efforts to integrate EMS into the fire service and was responsible for instituting our benefits model. His commitment was recognized by the IAFF which named the biannual EMS conference after him. Dom was a tireless advocate for firefighter health and safety, fairness and due process. He was a firefighter first and foremost; he served our department and our firefighters with great honor. Dom was a true pioneer who devoted so much of his time to do what was best for the membership. He was small in stature but he was tough, stubborn, intelligent, savvy and compassionate. He truly left the fire service a better place than he found it.

Generations of unionized firefighters will forever be indebted to our BROTHER Dominick "Dom" Barbera. He will forever be missed. He is survived by his wife Beverly. Our deepest condolences and prayers to his family. Details of his services are forthcoming.
